Learn How Shyness Can Be Stopped Today
If you are shy, you know how difficult this emotional condition can be. Shyness is difficult to combat. There are steps that you can begin to take today learn how to get over shyness.
As a qualified NLP practitioner , I’m often asked about how to get over being shy, it is such a common issue and I remember as a child I was so shy I would hide behind my dad’s legs whenever anyone spoke to me. I’ve got over it now of course, the passing years have given me a lot of confidence in myself but I remember vividly the feelings of shyness and how difficult it can be to deal with those feelings.
A quick an easy way that I often recommend to my clients is to use self hypnosis to reach the subconscious mind with suggestions of confidence. It is often said that if you ‘act as if’ you are confident, then you will appear to be confident and therefore, will naturally become confident.
It’s really frustrating to see people around you enjoying themselves, easily talking and laughing with each other, and to feel completely out of it. Shyness and social anxiety can affect anyone, and it can really make social occasions difficult. It can make you feel tongue-tied and awkward, lost and inadequate. You may long for the ground to swallow you. Or for a magic wand to transform your shyness into confidence and ease.
Shyness is a natural part of growing up, which most people eventually come through as they mature into more confident adults. But the high emotions surrounding socializing when you are young can have a ‘conditioning’ effect which can make you respond to social events with fear instead of excitement and pleasure. Over time, this response becomes automatic and can start to feel as if it is part of your ‘identity’ – and fixed.
BUT IT ISN’T FIXED!

Sometimes, people are shy around the opposite sex. If this is the case, make it a practice to get out with your friends and start conversations. Begin with short, small conversations with friends. As time passes you will be able to increase the intensity of your discussions.
Tackle your shyness in small steps to overcome the difficulty. Take it slow and easy. Master each step before you move on. The point of tackling shyness in steps is to give you time to develop skills and self-confidence. It is also important to practice overcoming shyness every day. This will build up your skills and self confidence. After you have increased your confidence in easy situations it’s time to move to more difficult situations.
After you have worked through each difficulty for a few weeks, you will know when it is time to move on in developing your social skills. Tackle each task on your list of overcoming shyness progressively. This will almost guarantee that you will be able to overcome shyness.
One of the most important things you can do for yourself is practice. You may want to practice in front of a mirror. At least, imagine yourself in a challenging social situation. Think of a situation that makes you nervous. Once you do this, imagine a conversation, including the reactions of others. Then, you can visualize yourself responding appropriately.
Make sure you don’t let others do your talking on your behalf. Sometimes friends or relatives of shy people speak up on the shy person’s behalf. They are trying to be helpful, but it actually keeps you from talking for yourself.
Give yourself credit as you make progress. Celebrate your ability to overcome shyness. Do something good for yourself. Share your progress with a friend. Instead of beating yourself up with negative self talk, it is important to praise yourself as you make progress.
