Help with overcoming public speaking issues?
I am looking for help with my public speaking fears.
I am usually an introvert, and so while i would love to get to know more people and be more friendly, i always get very nervous…..this is, however, ESPECIALLY true for when public speaking.
I think it has been getting worse for some reason, and I really need/want to improve on this because not only will it help me tremendously in college, but just in life in general with making more friends and whatnot.
I don’t just get nervous, I get REALLY nervous. I get nauseous. I stutter. I get clammy, sweaty skin.
my voice quivers, and the list goes on and on.
I know some advice might be to just do it over and over and it’ll get better, but I don’t see that this is helping yet, but I am still trying as much as I can.
I was wondering, however, if you can give me any tips while up there, preparing to go up, anything i can eat/drink or should avoid, website i should visit or videos i should watch on tips?
I have also heard hypnosis is supposed to be good, and that I should download some hypnosis stuff. Does anyone know where I can find such things? Preferably free, as I’m on a good ol’ college budget….
I’m not really into the hypnosis thing, but I really need and really want to get this under control, and will try anything.
Thanks for the help!
(ps I"ve also got speech class next semester, which i hope will help but i fear i will just tank because of this, so i REALLY want to see what i can do soon here)

I started reading this tony robbins book, and he talked about his development as a public speaker being attributed to repetition. His plan was to become as good as he could. And to do this, he scheduled 3 speaking events a day for a year! His thought was that if most people in his business were doing it once a week, he could earn 3 times the experience in the same time. Of course, he didn’t succeed all the time, every time. But he did develop his skills. I’d suggest making appointments with friends, family. Join toastmasters, where they help you develop your skills in a friendly environment. Also, in practicing a speech a million times will help you just get through it, if this seems like too much work. But practice in front of someone to get that experience, no matter how small.
I know how you feel… I feel like I am going blind and start to stutter… I get so nervous. I say really dumb things… Sorry, I do not have words to tell you how to speak better… but I can tell you I total understand.
Avoid that which gives you so much terror. If you can’t make eye contact, don’t. Focus on one particular point out in space away from people and direct your remarks there.
When you’ve given public talks before, do you recall what things tripped you up and made you so nervous? If so, make an effort to avoid them when it’s your turn to speak.
I hate public speaking. Then I joined the army and became a sergeant, with that promotion came certain responsibilities such as conducting physical training in front of the whole platoon. Not only did I have to talk in up in front of everyone, but I had to do goofy exercises too. The way I over- came it was to tell myself that there is no other choice but to do it. Ether I go up there and make a fool of myself or I go up there and pretend that know what I am doing, ether way I had to do it. so might as well pretend to be a good public speaker, kinda like an actor, your acting. Preparing and rehearsing helps but I have a feeling you already know that and are past that point. The truth of the matter is that the people listening to you are not interested in your failure or don’t care if your nervures, because even if you were by the end of the day they probably wont even remember you. They did psychology research in ucla about the fear of spotlight. The professor stated that people think that everyone is always watching them, when they really are not. The professor said " okay psyc test over" and everyone was saying " what? What psyc test?" then the professors asked if anyone notice the type of shirt the guy that walked up to ask him a question was wearing. Only one person out of 50 plus stududents could answer it.
